Friedrich was the son of councilor Dr. Ernst Haas. He was already enrolled at the University for World Trade in the winter semester of 1933/34 and the summer semester of 1934. Subsequently, he enrolled for four semesters at the law faculty of the university; later, one semester was credited to him by the University for World Trade. Because he was considered a 'Mischling' according to Nazi ideology, a permit from the Reich Ministry for Science, Education, and National Education (Berlin) was required for him to continue his studies at the 'University for World Trade' after the 'Anschluss' of Austria. This was granted to him in July 1942: "Since Haas took the diploma examination on March 28, 1941, the matter is considered resolved. No objections are raised against the issuance of the diploma, if it has not already been done." Thus, Haas was able to have his academic achievements retroactively recognized, which he had completed with reservations between the autumn trimester of 1940 and the trimester of 1941. In October 1942, he also retroactively received the diploma after having taken the examination already in March 1941 - therefore before the approval from the Reich Ministry. However, the ministerial approval applied exclusively to the diploma program: "Not admitted for further studies and for the doctorate." Therefore, Haas was "officially exmatriculated" in May 1941 after taking the diploma examination. A request for admission to the doctoral program was expressly rejected by the Reich Ministry in November 1942.
It was only after the end of Nazi rule and World War II that Haas could begin his doctoral studies: Between the summer semester of 1945 and the winter semester of 1946/47, he was again enrolled at the 'University for World Trade', and on March 22, 1947, he was awarded his doctorate here. Ironically, this was based on the same Reich German doctoral regulations that had previously denied him access by the Nazi regime. The doctoral diploma was not issued to him until mid-March 1949.
Since 1934, Haas had been registered at Blechturmgasse 26/2/10 (4th district of Vienna). During the war, he moved to the 1st district. Here, he changed his residence multiple times: From October 1943, he was registered at Bauernmarkt 10/3/18, and since the end of October 1944 in Johannesgasse 1/14. After being liberated from Nazi rule, he moved into an apartment in Herrengasse 6-8/8/4/12 in August 1945. In November 1948, he relocated to the 8th district.
Haas married twice. From the second marriage, a son was born.
