Gertrud Edith was the daughter of the factory director and book expert at the commercial court for the book industry Julius Löwinger (born September 25, 1887 in Vienna-Fünfhaus as the son of Philip Löwinger and Netti, née Herlinger) and his wife Hilda (born June 5, 1886 in Vienna-Ottakring as the daughter of Max Herzfeld and Fanny, née Reiss).

Following her attendance at the secondary school in the first district of Vienna, where she graduated with distinction on her high school diploma, Gertrud Edith Löwinger was enrolled at the University for World Trade for six semesters between the winter semester 1935/36 and the summer semester 1938. She lived in her parents' apartment at Salzgries 15/15 (1st district of Vienna).

Although she was just before her diploma examination and had received excellent grades in some examinations during her studies, she was denied the continuation of her studies and the taking of the diploma examination after the "Anschluss" of Austria due to her Jewish faith. Presumably together with her parents, she left the apartment on Salzgries on September 16, 1938, where the Löwinger family had been registered since April 4, 1925, to go into exile in London. Her further fate is unknown.

Gertrud Edith's mother had divorced Heinrich Krohn on November 15, 1915, whom she married on April 8, 1906, in Vienna. The following year, Hilda married Julius Löwinger in a second marriage in Vienna-Alsergrund.

Gertrud Edith's father had been a managing director of the iron foundry Osers & Bauer since October 1915, alongside Ernst Krohn, which manufactured engines and locomotives, among other things, and was located at Dresdnerstraße 81-85 (20th district of Vienna). After the shareholders' general meeting decided on the liquidation on February 23, 1929, Julius Löwinger acted as liquidator alongside Commercial Councillor Richard Bauer. At the end of February 1931, Löwinger became the owner of the company of the same name, which had since moved its headquarters to Boltzmanngasse 22 (9th district of Vienna); it sold raw oil, gas and gasoline engines as well as other machines and technical supplies in the successor states of the Habsburg Empire, the states of the Balkans, Turkey, and Spain. Furthermore, Gertrud Edith's father had been a member of the board of Minerva A.G. for trade of machines, industry, and installation supplies based in Zagreb since February 1925. Finally, it is documented that Julius Löwinger became a board member in the body of book experts and book auditors in 1924 and was admitted to the nearby Jewish lodge B’nai B’rith (Passauerplatz 9) on January 14, 1932.

As a consequence of the German Wehrmacht's invasion of Austria (starting March 12, 1938), Gertrud Edith Löwinger's father was removed from all professional and social functions due to his Jewish faith. He thus became a victim of the "Aryanization" under the Nazi regime.
