Hans Heinz Wachtel (called Hanns) was enrolled at the University for World Trade for three semesters between the winter semester 1936/37 and the winter semester 1937/38. He took the last examination, the first (general) examination, in February 1938; however, it is evident that he did not receive a certificate for it.
The orphan's pension he received after his father Eduard, born in 1882, died in an attack on the express train Vienna-Zagreb on January 22, 1934, was "discontinued" after the 'Anschluss' of Austria - as he himself stated to the Jewish Community of Vienna in May 1938. In accordance with the Aryanization regulations of the Greater German Reich, the Jewish student was furthermore forced to 'offer' his assets to the Vienna branch of the Deutsche Reichsbank. Finally, he had to sell the property at Wielandplatz 7 (10th district of Vienna) in 1940 far below its value. His assets were officially confiscated in April 1941 by the Secret State Police of Vienna for the benefit of the German Reich.
With the support of the Jewish Community, Wachtel managed to emigrate, along with his mother Melanie Regina (Renée) and his sister Dr. Gertrud Wachtel (born December 30, 1912, in Vienna, called Trude). While the two ladies found safety in London, Hans Heinz went to Peru. Wachtel left the family apartment at Lammgasse 10/3/10 (8th district of Vienna) at the end of July 1938. After World War II, he lived in the USA. In February 1994, he regained Austrian citizenship after having been stripped of German citizenship during the Nazi era due to the provisions of the Reich Citizenship Law of 1935.
His sister, who had earned her doctorate from the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna in March 1937, had her doctoral degree revoked for 'racial' reasons in July 1942; it was not until February 1955 that the revocation was declared null and void.
