Hans Joachim Singer was the son of Karl Singer (representative). Following his attendance at the Realgymnasium in the 8th district of Vienna, he was enrolled at the University for World Trade for three semesters between the winter semester 1936/37 and the winter semester 1937/38. He took his last exam, the First (general) exam, in February 1938. Although, as a Jew, he apparently could no longer participate in courses and exams after the 'Anschluss' of Austria, he was officially not deregistered during the Nazi era. It was only in October 1946 that he was removed from the university records to continue his studies in New York. He also received a high school diploma then. During his studies in Vienna, he lived at Neustiftgasse 107/17 (7th district of Vienna).

In the USA, he Americanized his first name to John. As John Joachim Singer, he died in January 1968 in the United States and was buried in the Jewish cemetery Mount Sinai Memorial Park. His wife, Lee R. Singer (born January 5, 1909, as the daughter of Karl Simon and Bessie Rubenstein, died May 3, 1995, in Los Angeles), is also laid to rest here.
