Richard Gelbert was the son of Pinkas Gelbert (merchant). He was enrolled at the University for World Trade for six semesters between the winter semester 1934/35 and the summer semester 1937. After he withdrew from a retake exam just four days after the Wehrmacht's invasion of Austria, the Jewish student had no more opportunity to complete his studies. At the end of September 1938, he deregistered from his apartment at Albertgasse 49/3/12 (8th district of Vienna) and fled abroad. After that, he disappears from the records.
