Vera was the daughter of Helene Rink. At the University for World Trade, she was enrolled between the winter semester of 1933/34 and the summer semester of 1937. Here, she initially successfully completed the diploma program, and the diploma certificate was issued in January 1937.

However, her doctoral promotion occurred during the period of the 'Anschluss' of Austria: She passed the First Rigorosum on February 11, 1938, and the Second Rigorosum in July 1938. Rink was one of the few members of the Jewish faith who were allowed by the Nazi regime to complete their doctorate after the Wehrmacht's invasion of Austria; this had to take place during the summer semester of 1938. Thus, Rink was the only Jewish woman who, together with six Jewish doctoral candidates, was promoted at the 'University for World Trade' on July 12, 1938. According to a decree from the Austrian Ministry of Internal and Cultural Affairs, which was then under the supervision of Reichsstatthalter Arthur Seyss-Inquart, the promotion of Jewish doctoral candidates was subject to a number of restrictions that were intended to strip this academic event of its dignity:

  • the promotion had to take place in private;
  • the candidates were not allowed to send invitations to relatives or acquaintances for the promotion;
  • the academic officials such as the rector and promoter were required not to appear in a gown;
  • and instead of the usual oral sponsorship, the Jewish doctoral candidates had to take the oath in writing by signing a pre-printed form.
  • Speeches were not allowed.

As stated in the records, Rink "in agreement with the rector" Bruno Dietrich had her dissertation on Loss Prevention and Fire Insurance printed, consisting of two pages; in mid-September 1938, she submitted 50 copies of her doctoral thesis to the university.

In mid-December 1938, she gave up her apartment at Hörtlgasse 18/1/6 (9th district of Vienna), where she had been registered since October 1933. She went to Nice. Here, her trail disappears.
