Wilhelm was the son of Samuel Wohlstein Reindler (1876-?) and Josefine Reindler, née Kosian (1890-1964).
Following his attendance at the Handelsakademie at Hamerlingplatz 5/6 (8th District of Vienna), Wilhelm Reindler was enrolled at the University for World Trade between the winter semester 1932/33 and the summer semester 1936. His diploma certificate was issued in September 1935. Although he was enrolled for all eight semesters required for the doctoral degree, he did not leave the university with the doctorate. It remains unclear whether this was due to personal reasons or if it was related to the fact that after the 'Anschluss' of Austria (March 1938), he was prohibited from achieving his doctorate due to his Jewish faith.
On January 3, 1939, he gave up his apartment at Negerlegasse 1/9 (2nd District) and fled to New Zealand. Here, he joined the army; according to his fellow student Alfred Maria Posselt, he rose to the rank of Major.
Around 1942, he married the New Zealander Patricia Mary Jarvie (born January 27, 1922, as the daughter of William Forrester Jarvie and Alice Mary Hey, died April 14, 1987). On February 15, 1946, he was naturalized in New Zealand, where he worked as a school teacher. In the meantime, he had anglicized his first name to William.
It was only after World War II that Reindler obtained his doctorate from the University for World Trade. His dissertation Contribution to the Teaching of Tax Principles (on a historical and systematic basis), which he submitted on September 15, 1951, was reviewed by Professors Walter Heinrich and Richard Kerschagl. After passing the two rigorous examinations in November 1951, he was awarded the doctoral degree in Commerce on December 15. He was exempted from the obligation to publish the dissertation; instead, he submitted four typewritten copies to the university on May 24, 1952.
In the meantime, Reindler had become a father to a son who was born in October 1950 in Vienna. After obtaining his doctorate, he commuted between Vienna, England, and New Zealand. He passed away on June 5, 1980, in Hamilton, New Zealand.
