Fränkel was enrolled at the University for World Trade for three semesters between the winter semester of 1936/37 and the winter semester of 1937/38. Here, he was credited with three additional semesters from the Faculty of Law of the University of Warsaw. Although he had thus studied the six semesters required for the diploma program, he was only able to complete parts of the diploma examination before the 'Anschluss' of Austria. The Jewish student received neither a departure certificate nor a diploma certificate. At the end of March 1938, he gave up his apartment in Nußgasse 1/7 (9th district of Vienna) and returned to Krakow.
His mother Anna Khaia (also called Chaja, born January 29, 1886, in Krakow, maiden name Dunkelblum), as well as his sister Dorota (born December 22, 1922, in Krakow) were killed in the ghetto of Kielce in 1942. His own fate and that of his father Dawid (born June 15, 1884, in Warsaw, occupation: commercial agent) are unknown.
