Josef Heinrich Halberstein was the younger son of Chaya (or Rachel) and the commercial employee Osias (or Oskar, Joshua, or Jehoschua) Halberstein.
He was enrolled at the University for World Trade for five semesters between the winter semester of 1935/36 and the winter semester of 1937/38. He completed his last exams in June and October 1937. He could not attend the final semester of the diploma program. After the 'Anschluss' of Austria, he had to leave the university without a diploma due to his Jewish descent. He left the apartment at Marktgasse 3/3/3 (9th district of Vienna), where he had been registered since 1935, on July 16, 1938, to emigrate to Jerusalem, as stated in the registration documents of the city of Vienna.
It is unknown whether he reached Palestine during the Nazi era. It is documented that Halberstein married Estelle Rose Levinson (December 15, 1925, to February 9, 2012) in her birthplace of Liverpool (United Kingdom) on June 9, 1959. They had three children from this marriage. Later, Halberstein emigrated to the USA with his family. Here, he Americanized his first name to Joseph Henry. Additionally, he adopted the Hebrew temple name Zvi. In Boston (Massachusetts), he was granted American citizenship on April 12, 1965; at that time, he lived in Cambridge (Mass.). He held a position in the public service in Dahlgren (Virginia).
His parents and his brother Daniel (January 1, 1913, to September 10, 1992) also survived the Second World War. They died in 1947, 1958, and 1992 in Israel and were buried there.
Joseph Henry Halberstein passed away on October 23, 1977, at the age of 59 in Fredericksburg (Virginia). He was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery. On the tombstone, next to the name in Latin letters and the dates of life, is the Star of David, the name in Hebrew characters (Joseph Zvi ben Johuschua), as well as the phrase from his relatives: „Clean hands and a pure heart“ [„Saubere Hände und ein reines Herz“]. His widow was buried in the same cemetery in February 2012.
